"Find Your Park" Exhibit at Steamtown NHS

The National Park Service on March 30 announced the launch of Find Your Park, a public awareness and education campaign celebrating the milestone centennial anniversary of the Service in 2016 and setting the stage for the next 100 years.

Find Your Park invites the public to see that a national park is more than just a place - it can be a feeling, a state of mind, or a sense of American pride.   Beyond vast landscapes, the campaign highlights historical, urban, and cultural parks, as well as National Park Service programs that protect, preserve and share nature, culture, and history in communities nationwide.  Further, Find Your Park encourages people to find their own personal connections within the network of national parks and public lands.

In conjunction with the announcement, Steamtown National Historic Site, downtown Scranton, recently opened a new “Find Your Park” exhibit at the park’s Changing Exhibits Gallery. Visitors are encouraged to view the exhibit, identify their favorite park, write a brief note of what makes it special for them, and then deposit their vote into a special ballot box. Weekly, park rangers will empty the ballot box and continue the “What Does Park Mean to You,” Scrabble-type word game, located at the exhibit entrance.  Eventually, a map of the United States at the exhibit will depict the popularity of various parks from the point of view of Steamtown NHS visitors. Visitors may also go online to to share their stories and experiences, or use #FindYourPark!

The exhibit will be open through the Service’s centennial year, September 4, 2016, and is included in the park’s daily entrance fee which is $7.00 for all, ages 16 and older; children 15 and younger accompanied by an adult are free.

Located in downtown Scranton, Pa., Steamtown NHS is open daily from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. From I-81 follow exit 185 (Central Scranton Expressway); then, follow the brown and white signs to the park entrance at Lackawanna and Cliff Avenues (GPS: N 41.41, W 75.67).
