Susquehanna Brewery Company crafting ways to produce award-winning beer

A six generation craft brewery located on Main Street in Pittston is home to the Susquehanna Brewery Company; a small and independent craft brewer.

Ed Maier, the great-great-grandson of brewing icon Charles Stegmaier and Mark Nobile are the owners of this successful 5-year old Jenkins Township Brewery.  In 2015, they decided to expand their operation to better showcase their products and built a new tasting room.  They realized visitors love to see how beer is crafted and is the main reason for spacious windows showcasing the brewery’s huge vats.  For the first time ever guests are able to sample a pint of beer prior to purchasing a case.  The company distributes beer throughout eastern Pennsylvania and as far west as State College and in New Jersey. They recently expanded their distribution into Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

The Susquehanna Brewing Company distributes six different varities of year-round beer; Hopcellerator West Coast IPA, HopFive IPA, Pils-Noir, Goldencold Lager, 6th Generation Stock Ale, So-Wheat.  Plus five seasonal beers including: Shady Spot Lemon Shandy, southern Rye IPA, Toboggan Chocolate Doppelbock, Pumpkin Ale, Oktoberfest.

The locally brewed lager earned a bronze medal in the Munich Helles category at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado. The festival, one of the largest beer competitions in the country, brought in beers from about 6,000 breweries and awarded 276 medals.

The owners continually invest in the company and have purchased new equipment to increase beer production.  Within the last two years, four additional 100-barrel fermenters (bringing their total to 11), new bottling machinery and an automated packaging line have been added to keep up with the demand in the craft beer industry.

The brewery holds regular events at their facility located at 635 South Main Street, Pittston, PA 18640.  Free Tours are given every Saturday at 2pm and 4pm and Sundays at 2pm. Groups are welcomed by scheduled appointment.  The Tasting Room hours are Thursday and Friday from 2-9pm; Saturday: 12-9pm and Sunday from 12-7pm.  See their website for promotional events held throughout the state.  An online store offers various shirts, baseball hats, signage and various craft brewed beer novelties.
