Coal, Train & Trolleys Fun Day

The anthracite coal or black diamonds, as they were called, fueled the world. Immigrants came from all over looking for a better life and work. Take a step back in time and see how the miners worked and lived and experience transportation of days gone by.

Eckley Miners’ Village, a living history site, is dedicated to the lives of the immigrants who labored in the coal fields. Tour the museum, company store and a miner’s home.

The Lackawanna Coal Mine takes you on a journey 300 feet below ground. Start your adventure by riding a coal car down into the tunnel and learn the fascinating methods used and the heroic efforts involved in mining’s history.

Steamtown National Historic Site relive the era of steam as the engines come back to life. Feel the heat from the firebox, the ground vibrate under your feet and hear the bell and whistle.

Scranton was one of the first cities to have a successful trolley line in 1887. The history of how this mode of transportation changed the dynamics of eastern Pennsylvania can be experienced at the Electric City Trolley Museum and on the grounds of Steamtown National Historic Site.

Spend the Day Cooling Down

The four state parks in the County offer pools and lakes for swimming, boat rentals, concessions and family camping. Please visit each site for exact amenities.

Families with children of all ages will enjoy a day on the Lehigh River, a classic class II, III river that gives everyone a thrill. Choose whitewater rafting with one of two outfitters: Whitewater Challengers or Pocono Whitewater. A full day of getting wet, riding the rapids and sometimes swimming, guarantees to keep everyone entertained and exhausted by the end of the day.


Spend the day at the Montage Mountain Wavepool, Alpine Run Waterslide Complex, Cross-Country Canal, Iceberg Alley Luge or take little ones to Polar Bear Pond. Get there early, claim your spot and enjoy the day in the sun while having fun on the many water rides.



The Susquehanna River is a great place to paddle and take in beautiful scenery, fishing, bird watching and especially photography. Rent a kayak or canoe fromSusquehanna Kayak and Canoe or Five Mountain Outfitters and head out for predominately flat water paddling with some occasional ripples.

Get Outside and Play

Luzerne County has been voted one of the top outdoor counties in the state of PA. Explore the four corners of the County visiting state parks, lakes or picnic by one of the numerous streams.

Looking for the best trails, make sure you check out the trails and parks page at the official Visit Luzerne County tourist site. Trails vary from an easy flat bike route along the river to a scenic hike through Ricketts Glen State Park exploring the waterfalls.



Bring on the competition! Gather your family and compete against others in one of 50 Skirmish paintball fields featuring exciting games for all ages and levels. Action fun for all ages.




Baseball fans will hit a homerun at PNC Field, home to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. The Triple A affiliate of the New York Yankees call this brand new field home.  Tons of kid friendly activities, great food and check the schedule for the amazing firework displays. Want to add a little bit of fun? Park at the Electric City Trolley and hop on board and ride the trolley to the game!

Knoebels Amusement Park, a free admission park,with a variety of rides, including roller coasters and a Haunted Mansion, known far and wide as one of the best traditional haunted rides anywhere.

Plan your Escape like Houdini at the new E5c4pe room and then see how the master really did it at the Houdini Museum featuring memorabilia and artifacts from the famous Houdini. You will be amazed during the magic show and tour.

Lions, tigers and bears... oh my! Take a scenic drive with the kids to Claws and Paws Wild Animal Park. Visit and interact with 120 species of animals. Hand feed the giraffe, mingle with the turtles or give the deer and goats a hug in the petting zoo.

Falls Edge Farm meet the Fefs and Maidens while mom and dad visit the boutique. A small mom-and-pop piece of paradise located near Ricketts Glen State Park.

The Lands at Hillside Farms is a must-stop with the family. Enjoy homemade ice cream, organic products and flavored milk. Feed the farm animals, visit the barns, shop the antiques and great local products in the Mercantile.
